NYTimes: “…This has less to do with factual accuracy than with the way facts are shaped, juxtaposed and given emotional weight. The evil of the Nazis is hardly denied, but it is mainly localized within a few cartoonishly sadistic SS and Gestapo commanders, who are nearly as cruel to regular German soldiers as they are to Jews and Russians. There is also an element of moral relativism in the way the film portrays the Polish resistance, whose members hate Jews as much as the Germans, but with worse manners, and the bestial, rampaging members of the Red Army, who have no manners at all.”

An interesting article in NYTimes about people, who tattoo number on their hand “to be intimately, eternally bonded to their survivor-relative”. The article talks about history of Auschwitz tattoos, motivation of people getting these tattoos now, and reaction they get from others. There’s also a preview clip of a new Israeli documentary “Numbered,” which make its premiere in the United States next month at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Directed by E.A. Dupont in 1923, this rarely screened silent film follows the ambitions of Baruch Mayr, the son of an orthodox rabbi from Galicia who decides to break from the family tradition and leave the shtetl to become an actor in Vienna. An evocative depiction of Jewish life and the atmosphere of Viennese theater, Dupont’s film will be accompanied by a live performance of a new soundtrack by pioneering multimedia artist Thomas Köner.

Wed, Oct 10, 2012. 7PM. At BAM Rose Cinemas. More info

Cool Toronto Jewish Film Festival poster. Apparently, it was designed by Overdrive Design, who also designed a pretty clever poster for 2009 Festival.

Youtube, playlist in 5 parts

And, there’s a great book on the subject, about legendary Aba Kovner and his comrades “The Avengers” by Rich Cohen

Vidal Sassoon died from Leukemia on 9 May 2012 at his home in Los Angeles. He was a genuinely cool guy, check out a documentary about him, if you haven’t done so yet.

Here’s an extensive quote from Wiki:
“Sassoon was born to Jewish parents in Hammersmith, London, and lived in Shepherds Bush. His father, Jack Sassoon, was from Thessaloniki, Greece, and his mother, Betty, came from a family of immigrants from Ukraine. Sassoon had a younger brother, Ivor, who died from a heart attack at the age of 46. Jack Sassoon, a womanizer, left his family when Vidal was three.

Due to his mother’s extreme poverty and now being a single parent, she was forced to place Sassoon and his younger brother in a Jewish orphanage, where they stayed for seven years.

At the age of 17, although having been too young to serve in the Second World War, he became the youngest member of the 43 Group, a Jewish veterans’ underground organisation. It fought against anti-semitism after the war ended by breaking up Fascist meetings in East London. One newspaper refers to him as an “anti-fascist warrior-hairdresser”, whose aim was to prevent Sir Oswald Mosley’s far-Right movement from spreading “messages of hatred” in the period following the Second World War.

In 1948, at the age of 20, he joined the Haganah (which shortly afterwards became the Israeli Defense Forces) and fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which began after Israel achieved statehood. During an interview, he described the year he spent training with the Israelis as “the best year of my life,” and recalled how he felt:

“When you think of 2,000 years of being put down and suddenly you are a nation rising, it was a wonderful feeling. There were only 600,000 people defending the country against five armies, so everyone had something to do.””

An international project, a new movie about Holocaust premiers soon in Jerusalem.

“A story of a pair of shoes that starts in the shop window and runs all the way to Auschwitz. The work reflects director’s original concept: shoes is the only object in the shot”

On iSteve.blogspot.com: Joel Stein (LA Times) asks “How Jewish is Hollywood?”

A couple of quotes:

“The Jews are so dominant, I had to scour the trades to come up with six Gentiles in high positions at entertainment companies. When I called them to talk about their incredible advancement, five of them refused to talk to me, apparently out of fear of insulting Jews. The sixth, AMC President Charlie Collier, turned out to be Jewish.”

“But Foxman said he is proud of the accomplishments of American Jews. “I think Jews are disproportionately represented in the creative industry. They’re disproportionate as lawyers and probably medicine here as well,” he said. He argues that this does not mean that Jews make pro-Jewish movies any more than they do pro-Jewish surgery.”

“…If you close your eyes and try to picture the Holocaust, or the birth of the State of Israel, you’re probably picturing it in black and white, right? Because all of the images you know from those times are in black and white.

Well, color film existed in those days, it was just really expensive, which meant very few people had it. But a rich American named Fred Monosson was able to afford it and took it along with him on his lengthy adventures in Israel, Europe and the Middle East starting in 1947…” Check out this amazing trailer for documentary “I Was There In Color”.

6369_237335370345_237262730345_7723228_2024383_nFrom film’s Facebook page: Awake Zion is a documentary that reveals the unsuspecting links between Rasta, Reggae and Judaism, through a musical and spiritual sojourn exploring the meaning of identity.

Through one woman’s musical odyssey exploring the meaning of identity, Awake Zion is a documentary that explores the mysterious connections between Rasta, Reggae and Judaism. All the way back to the alleged sultry affair between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, a certain blend of Jewish flavor has crept into the spiritual history of Ethiopia, turning up subtly in Rastafarian lifestyle, and then inevitably in reggae. Consider that one of the first reggae songs ever broadcast on radio was called “Israelites,” or that Rastas and Orthodox Jews share fundamental views towards faith, dietary and sexual ethics, and particularly the notion of repatriation.

Awake Zion brings together Jewish and Jamaican artists, scholars, and historians in a celebration of music, roots, and culture, on a personal journey that starts in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where Caribbean and Jewish cultures have a history of adversity; to Jamaica, the birthplace of reggae, and ultimately to Israel, where a sizzling reggae scene thrives.

Mission: Awake Zion aims to deconstruct what it means to be Jewish, what it means to be Rasta, what it means to be black or white, and to focus on the power of tolerance and open-mindedness in the face of one’s own roots. Everyone, with his/her own worldview, is forever chasing some kind of Zion—be it geographic, material or spiritual. Awake Zion reminds you that, despite the struggle to get there, you are somehow always home.
