“Евреи” – амстердамский футбольный клуб “Ajax”

На чемпионате мира по футболу, после гола в ворота бразильцев голландским игроком Wesley Sneijder, на трибунами взвился израильский флаг. Оказывается Снеидер из амстердамского клуба “Ajax”, именуемого “Евреями”, и символика-атрибутика у клуба соответствующая.

Из старой статьи в NYTimes: “About thirty years ago, the other teams’ supporters started calling us Jews because there was a history of Jews in Ajax,” explained Fred Harris, a stocky man with brush-cut hair and a thick gold chain around his neck, “so we took it up as a point of pride and now it has become our identity.”

Интересная статья о происхождении этого прозвища и проблемах, с которыми приходится сталкиваться клубу и его фанатам.

Newly translated “Everything Flows” by Vasily Grossman

grossm “This courageous novel, first published in samizdat, is a compelling restatement of some old truths about the fundamental and ineluctable nature of freedom.” –New & Noteworthy, The New York Times

“Grossman traces the blame for the terror of the Stalin years back through Lenin, to the roots of the Russian character, to the mystical national soul that Russians have always considered their greatest strength…Grossman put his finger on the crux of the issue as today’s Russians see it: What responsibility do they bear for the horrors perpetrated in the course of Russian and Soviet history?” –Los Angeles Times

defamationflyer2rotDEFAMATION – (unrated)

2009 – Israel/Denmark/USA/Austria – Hebrew/English (with English subtitles) – 91 minutes – First Run Features

Directed by: Yoav Shamir

Featuring: Norman Finkelstein

showtimes and tickets

Intent on shaking up the ultimate ’sacred cow’ for Jews, Israeli director Yoav Shamir embarks on a provocative – and at times irreverent – quest to answer the question, “What is anti-Semitism today?” Does it remain a dangerous and immediate threat? Or is it a scare tactic used by right-wing Zionists to discredit their critics?

Speaking with an array of people from across the political spectrum (including the head of the Anti-Defamation League and its fiercest critic, author Norman Finkelstein) and traveling to places like Auschwitz (alongside Israeli school kids) and Brooklyn (to explore reports of violence against Jews), Shamir discovers the realities of anti-Semitism today. His findings are shocking, enlightening and – surprisingly – often wryly funny.

“An incredibly bold and brave film.”
Michael Moore, Filmmaker

“Provocative and timely, intelligent and wry.”
Leslie Felperin, Variety

“Alternately sweet-tempered and outrageous. Will spark long arguments deep into the night among Jewish and non-Jewish viewers alike.”
Andrew O’Hehir, Salon
